RUSI Seminar: Climate Change and North Korea

Happy to share the video of a recent seminar hosted by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) in London, featuring Catherine Dill from the Council on Strategic Risks, Gabriela Bernal from the University of North Korean Studies and Daily NK, Lee Sangsoo from the Institute for Security and Development Policy, and Ben Habib from La Trobe University, moderated by Christina Variale from RUSI.

About the event

The first in a series of events exploring non-traditional security challenges in the context of North Korea. The discussion will focus on the impacts of climate change.

Security concerns relating to North Korea are often confined to Pyongyang’s belligerence, the ongoing development of its nuclear and missile programmes, and the country’s atrocious human rights record. Much less attention has been paid to the impact of climate change. At this event we will be joined by four experts who have considered how North Korea is dealing with climate change, as well as the impact this could have on both domestic and foreign policy. We will explore how climate change implications relate to conventional security risks, and what this might mean for existing international policies designed to mitigate security threats from North Korea.
